Hedgerow 2016

The release of our 2016 Hedgerow, is the third vintage of this award winning beer, and arguably the finest vintage to date.

We’ve sat on it for long enough in both barrel and bottle, and are proud to finally offer it up for release for other beer lovers to thoroughly enjoy! For those that have tried our previous 2012 or 2014 releases, you’ll know what delight you’re in for. For those discovering this beer for the first time, or have developed an appreciation for sour beer since our last release – you’re in for one hell of a ride!

Presented exquisitely in 375ml Champagne bottle finished with cork and cage, this beer is one of the pioneering Australian sour beers & makes its return on a bi-annual basis with a new blend from our barrel farm. A Flanders-style red ale that we selectively age on sloe fruit, hawthorn berries and rose hips, all hand collected from hedgerows on the brewery farm – hence the beer name. A superb blend of one, two and three year versions of the beer that presents a deep mahogany colour and thin white head when poured aggressively, with an intended low/soft carbonation in line with historic examples of the style. When the blended beer finally hits the glass, Hedgerow is sharp & sour, full of tart rhubarb, barnyard funk & ripe cherry aromas. The mouthfeel will get you puckering while the flavour arrangement of raspberry, dark cherry & burnt cranberry will leave you smiling. Hedgerow is a sour delight that will turn your tongue on its head

It's an amazing example of the new crop of great Australian sours emerging in the market, inspired by its brilliant Belgian predecessors, get your bottle soon or risk another 2 year wait.

CUT TO THE CHASE:

WHAT IT IS: A 6.1%-ABV sour “reddish brown,” but more accurately a Flanders-style red ale.

WHAT IT TASTES LIKE: Sharp, snappy, fruity and tarty: This isn’t a sour for beginners. Let the sourness zap your tongue for the first few sips, then hunt for nuances of wood, earth, rhubarb and berry. The swallow’s zippy, funky and sweet.

HOW IT’S MADE: It’s more art than production: Van Dieman head brewer Will Tatchell ages the beer in oak barrels for one to three years, then blends batches together to form the flavor profile he’s after.

WANT MORE?: If you’ve caught the sour beer bug and you love Hedgerow, don’t skip out on one of our all-time favorite Flanders-style beers, buy through the brewery website or at great independent beer venues.
