our roots
THE BREWERY; Craftsmanship. Honesty. Authenticity.
Established in 2009, Van Dieman Brewing is a modern farm-brewery nestled in Tasmania’s northern midlands. Our mission is to craft beers that embody the essence of our surroundings through a ground-to-glass brewing approach. Every day, we produce fresh, modern beers alongside wood-aged wild beers that capture a distinct sense of time and place.
At the heart of our brewery is a unique and unorthodox do-it-all method that celebrates our farm's resources. We cultivate ingredients on-site and brew with a deep respect for nature and heritage. Rooted among century-old oak trees and vast pastures, Van Dieman Brewing pours the spirit of Tasmania's produce into our beers, creating an authentic estate approach to brewing with exceptional quality.
Founder, brewer, and farmer Will Tatchell brings his impressive brewing pedigree and agricultural expertise from the UK and Australia to Van Dieman Brewing. We invite the inquisitive and discerning to savour our beers and experience the simple pleasures of life in the present moment. Pull up a chair, raise a glass, and immerse yourself in the liquid stories our land tells.
Van Dieman Brewing is committed to celebrating the intersection of Tasmanian agriculture, heritage, hospitality, and brewing. Through sustainable and responsible on-farm production, we create an authentic liquid storytelling experience. Join us in celebrating the joy of life at the farm, as we brew exceptional beers and honour the legacy of our land.
THE FARM; Ground-To-Glass, Estate Sourced. Real
The Van Dieman Brewing farm, where beer’s essential ingredients — hops, grain, water, and yeast — are grown and harvested, is situated on some of the most picturesque land in Tasmania. Hop cones, which add bitterness and a bouquet of floral scents to our brews, grow on 20-foot bines next to the brewery. Barley and wheat are cultivated and harvested in the surrounding paddocks, then malted on-site to release the sugars necessary for fermentation, producing our award-winning beers. When our silos are filled, they contain enough ingredients to brew 160,000 beers. Water is drawn from on-farm springs, which also supply water troughs scattered across the paddocks for livestock. Yeast is captured from the ambient air and native blossoms, providing the fermentation needed for our unique beers.
Van Dieman Brewing began as a sidestep from agriculture for founder Will Tatchell. Growing up on the farm and later earning an Agricultural Science degree at university led to the realization that beer, at its core, is a magnificent agricultural product in liquid form. Establishing the brewery in 2009 on the family farm seemed a natural choice and has since evolved organically, merging seamlessly with farming operations into a fully-fledged beer farm. We create farm-fresh modern beers alongside an array of wild and blended farm-style ales that embody a sense of place and time.
Our vision is to build a destination farm brewery that is unique, educational, and pioneering, where our beers hearken back to a time when people were wild, free, innovative, and connected to their local area. Surrounded by the creative solitude of nature, we make great beer with great people, telling our story through liquid storytelling. Join us at Van Dieman Brewing, where we celebrate the joy of life at the farm, brewing exceptional beers that honor the legacy of our land.
